Macquarie started out in 1969 as the Australian subsidiary of Hill Samuel & Co, Limited, a London-based merchant bank. In 1985 it became private trading bank and opened the doors of its first branch in Sydney under the name Macquarie Bank. Branches in Melbourne and Brisbane followed shortly after.
